Time Well Spent // A Costa Brava Bikepacking Adventure
Two mates, bikes packed, exploring the very best of the Spanish Costa Brava.
In March this year, Yuri Hauswald (Gravel Hall of Fame Athlete) and I spent three days bikepacking along the Costa Brava aboard gravel bikes.
We had no intention of riding fast or setting records, but rather getting to know one another and making the most of the little time we get to spend together given our locations on separate continents.
Good food, amazing landscapes, world class riding and an appreciation for the little time we have on this crazy place called 'Planet Earth.'

    There are dozens of this style of rack that claim "no lifting", still requires the user to lift the front half of the bike to vertical, balance the bike on the back wheel and roll it into a narrow target. Not something the average 6yo can do with a steel framed kids bike. Any solutions for kids out there?

    Did you go down in the frame size with respect to the tarmac? In accordance with Specialized suggestion, I could use a 56 frame but Im (also) worried about the stack on the 56 Roubaix. Currently Im using a 56 Allez sprint frame, but I do not know if I could go down to a 54 size... Thank you for this video... it is amazing the content and your explanation about the performance of such bike... I think this coul help us a lot to make better purchase decisions. Thanks in advanced.

      Great question. The front end of the Roubaix is higher than the tarmac and allez, but I don’t think that means you need to size down. For endurance style riding, not being in a super aggressive position is actually an advantage. I would say that if you’re a 56 on your Allez, you should go with a 56 on the Roubaix. I think you’ll love the bike, it’s a weapon! 🔥🔥

    Loving this, brother. I had a ride like that just last Friday. Just that one of a kind experience of getting to spend the day out on two wheels with no schedule, no pressure, no worries, just a rough idea of where I wanted to go. A ride for the soul. The advantage here is clearly the ability to use any bag/stuff on the cradles. This also enables one to pack all the gear off the bike, and then attach it, as opposed to other styles where the bag is fixed to the bike/rack. And no moving parts after installation. The seat stay thing was my concern as well, but they gave me the same tricks and they appear to do the job. On a road setup, the cradle comes a bit further backward, but that actually makes room for a saddle bag as well, when going in heavy 👌🏼 SO really is the best of both worlds.

    I know this post is from a year ago, but I felt compelled to share my two cents as someone who dealt with clinical depression for almost a decade without meds. Looking back, I’ve come to realize that depression isn’t about your superficial traits. It’s deeper. One thing I’ve noticed in many people’s stories (besides the chemical stuff) is this struggle between who they really are and who they think they should be. This often leads to that feeling that life’s just slipping away and there’s nothing you can do about it. The sense of purpose and meaning you used to have can feel lost, like it’s stuck in the past and nothing you do makes any difference. It’s possible that the adult version of you, with all your cool accomplishments and stuff, might have overshadowed the inner child Jack. The Jack who maybe loves cycling because the wind in your face makes you feel unstoppable or the friends you made along the way. But somewhere down the line, maybe that meaning got warped by outside influences. Or maybe it has nothing to do with cycling at all. That emptiness might be a sign that your nervous system is overloaded. Your emotions could be all tangled up. It’s crucial to find a way to let these bottled-up feelings out, or you’ll never resolve that internal conflict. Guided journaling helped me a ton. Something like “The Artist’s Way,” where you just spill your thoughts onto the page can really help you get to the root of what’s bothering you. My internal conflict was so simple it almost makes me mad how long my life was on hiatus over it. Ultimately, I reconnected with my "why." Depression sucks like no other, but I’m glad I didn’t run from it. It humbled the heck out of me and made me realize what’s really important. I’m rooting for everyone on this thread. Hang in there! It's so worth it on the other side.

      Fine for alum seat stays but I imagine still slip down really easily as mentioned in comments. Crazy to use it on carbon stays which is all my bikes are higher end mtb and gravel. The amount you would have to tighten down is just stupid considering the fibers are not aligned to protect from that kind of torque. Better to go with the Old Man racks and save your carbon frame because they main stabilizing downward force is held by the axle mounting. Plus, the have kits for most mountain and road bikes on their site. That said you get what you pay for and Old Man racks are about 250+ total drive out.

    • @geu6270
      @geu6270 7 дней назад

      @@jackultracyclistofficial smart to mount them with the main wght on the axle. Then locking so it does not pivot on the seatstays with lots less torque force required protecting those stays. (a must for carbon stays as is my case) but....$$$ beats paying for a new frame.

    I have the pannier version. Used with a dry bag a voile straps its fine although heavy. I wouldn't use it off road on a carbon frame and have seen pocs of failure on a carbon road frame. With single pannier commuting along a canal its poor. The pannier "stay" is about as useful a a chocolate fireguard. I mitigate with a voile strap to stop it moving too much but it's a bodge. The rack is prone to slip loaded asymmetrically (single pannier)

    I did the Munda biddi as well with the aeroe rack and used a 13 liter Ortlieb dry bag with voile straps, absolutely caned it and it held up Beautifully!! I previously used an Ortlieb saddle bag and gave up because (1) got sick of the hassle taking it on and off the bike or Everything falling onto ground (2) the bag wore out where it attached to the saddle … same thing for my buddy btw , he’s had two bags replaced under warranty this way, (3) bag droop onto tyre from time to time (4) sway sway sway. The aeroe solved all these things and the weight penalty is nothing next to the hassle saved on a long trip

  • @OldLostGuy
    @OldLostGuy 2 месяца назад

    I have used Aeroe handlebar cradle on approx 10 rides so far. On the first two ride with only 4.5lbs on the cradle, the cradle kept slipping lower, pressing into my hydraulic brake lines. The Clamping kept loosening. On the next few rides, the cradle slipped almost immediately with approx. 6lbs in the cradle. I then used a handlebar extender to move the cradle out from my handlebars. On the next ride with 7lbs in the cradle the extender held but the cradle clamps loosened and the cradle flopped almost to tire level and pressed against my brake lines. On my last ride I think i have found a solution. I put an additional extender under the first extender so when the cradle clamps loosen. The cradle did flop, but only as far as the second extender not into my brake lines. I now have built up the extender thickness with rubber inner tube and really cranked the cradle clamps down on the tubing. I am testing this latest version and it seems to hold. My complaint about the cradle itself Is that the dry bag (that contains my tent. fly, poles and ground sheet) keeps bouncing and keeps spinning in the cradle. It is like the cradle material is not sturdy enough to even carry a 7 lb load. Neither the company I purchased it from Mountain Equipment Co-op nor Aeroe seem to care about the lack of performance or quality of this product. This product can only be used with a lot of work.
